Bid to link private dental college, Co-operative Medical College
A sly attempt is being made to link a private dental college proposed to be set up at Kakkanad, to the Kochi Co-operative Medical College, so as it use its resources with the alleged connivance of the Co-operation Ministry and CAPE, which currently controls the college.
The attempt is being made at a time when the government takeover of the medical college is being delayed. It’s learnt that a private outfit based at Chennai, Sunshine Educational Trust, approached the Co-operation Minister with this request and influenced him.
The trust chairman allegedly had the blessings of some League leaders too. The Minister forwarded the case to CAPE which in turn asked the CMC medical director to explore the possibility of such a union.
The chairman of the trust also contacted CMC medical director Dr Junaid Rehman, who, however, discouraged him. The chairman told him that such tie-ups were prevalent in North India. But Dr Rehman said that since such models were not seen in Kerala, it wouldn’t be possible to pursue it.
There are common subjects for both dental and MBBS courses like anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology and surgery and the dental college can send their students to  CMC for classes in such subjects.
“They would be looking at the faculty, laboratory and operation theater and also patients at the college to run their BDS course without spending much”, said a doctor. (Deccan Chronicle).
